Tracing its origins to 1857, Assumption University is one of the most historic Roman Catholic institutes of higher learning in Canada. Originally founded by the Jesuits, Assumption is now under affiliated with the Congregation of St. Basil (Basilian Fathers). Assumption began as a college in the classical French style, became a comprehensive provincial university, and since 1963 has remained an independent University federated with its daughter university, the University of Windsor. In addition, Assumption University is affiliated with Canterbury College (Anglican) and Iona College (Interfaith).
Assumption University became the first Catholic university in the world to affiliate with an Anglican college - five years before the start of the Second Vatican Council. Today, Assumption University offers both undergraduate and graduate courses. Assumption is home to the new online Graduate Diploma in Catholic Studies which attracts students from across the region. The five-course diploma is seen as a hiring asset by eight Catholic school boards in Ontario. It also has pathways to both an M.Ed. at the University of Windsor and M.Div. and M.T.S. degrees at St. Peter's Seminary. Assumption also has a dynamic campus ministry program that provides students with opportunities for spiritual, social, and educational growth. One of its longest traditions is the Christian Culture Series that was founded in the 1930s. The series culminates each year with the coveted Christian Culture Series Gold Medal awarded to individuals who are exponents of Christian ideals in their daily lives. Assumption is also home to the Stephen Jarislowsky Chair in Religion and Conflict. The chairholder conducts cutting-edge research, teaches innovative courses, and engages with the Windsor-Essex community on an array of topics on religion. In 2021, Assumption revived its Fr. Joe Quinn Social Justice Series. The seminar series is open to middle and high school students and provides them with an opportunity to learn about social justice issues. Assumption continues to honour its motto of teaching goodness, discipline, and knowledge as it approaches its bicentennial.
