Re: Truth and Reconciliation Fund Annual Collection
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
Just over a year ago on the ‘penitential pilgrimage’ that Pope Francis made to Canada, he said, “In a fraternal spirit, I encourage the Bishops and the Catholic community to continue taking steps towards the transparent search for truth and to foster healing and reconciliation.” This year I am pleased to announce an exciting initiative, an annual collection for the diocesan Truth and Reconciliation Fund.
In December 2021, I established a Truth and Reconciliation Committee for the Diocese of London. Over the last twenty months the Committee has initiated dialogue with local Indigenous and Métis Peoples and promoted educational opportunities for clergy and diocesan employees. In June, the Committee provided an update on their work (click here) and information on approved projects (click here).
They have already done a lot of good work but, in their own words, “there is much more work to be done” as we continue the journey on the path to healing and reconciliation. The Committee’s mandate includes promoting a fundraising campaign. The bishops of Canada have promised to raise $30-million for the national Indigenous Reconciliation Fund (IRF). Over the next few years, the Diocese of London will be contributing $1.8-million towards that fund. The goal of the IRF is to support projects that advance healing and reconciliation initiatives, promote culture and language revitalization, foster education and community building and initiate dialogues involving Indigenous elders, spiritual leaders and youth focusing on Indigenous spirituality and culture.
Today I am writing to you, the faithful of the Diocese, inviting you to support this fund. Your contributions will help us to reach our $1.8-million commitment and to support local projects that are determined in collaboration with the First Nations and Métis people within the diocese and, as well, with other Indigenous organizations and service providers.
On the weekend of 23-24 September, the weekend before National Day for Truth and Reconciliation on Saturday, September 30th, each parish will take up a special Truth and Reconciliation Fund collection. We are grateful for your financial support, and we ask that you pray that our Catholic community will continue taking steps that foster healing and reconciliation.
Some have already contributed to the fund. I thank them for their support. Others have asked how they can contribute online. You can make an online donation through your parish or use the Diocese of London's online giving link (https://dol.pllenty.com). Please select "Truth and Reconciliation Fund" from the available options or add it as a comment, so that your gift can be allocated properly.

Chers frères et sœurs dans le Christ,
Il y a un peu plus d'un an, lors du « pèlerinage pénitentiel » que le pape François a effectué au Canada, il a déclaré : « Dans un esprit fraternel, j'encourage les évêques et la communauté catholique à continuer de prendre des mesures vers la recherche transparente de la vérité et à favoriser la guérison et la réconciliation." Cette année, j'ai le plaisir d'annoncer une initiative passionnante, une collecte annuelle pour le Fonds diocésain de Vérité et de Réconciliation.
En décembre 2021, j'ai créé un comité Vérité et Réconciliation pour le diocèse de London. Au cours des vingt derniers mois, le comité a entamé un dialogue avec les peuples autochtones et métis locaux et a promu des opportunités de formation pour le clergé et les employés diocésains. En juin, le comité a fourni une mise à jour de son travail (cliquez ici) et des informations sur les projets approuvés (cliquez ici).
Ils ont déjà fait beaucoup de bon travail, mais selon leurs propres mots, « il y a encore beaucoup de travail à faire » alors que nous poursuivons notre chemin vers la guérison et la réconciliation. Le mandat du Comité comprend la promotion d’une campagne de financement. Les évêques du Canada ont annoncé un engagement financier de 30 millions de dollars pour le Fonds national de réconciliation avec les Autochtones (FRA). Au cours des prochaines années, le diocèse de London contribuera 1,8 million de dollars à ce fonds. Son objectif est de soutenir des projets qui font progresser les initiatives de guérison et de réconciliation, favorisent la revitalisation de la culture et de la langue, favorisent l'éducation et le développement communautaire et initient des dialogues impliquant les aînés, les chefs spirituels et les jeunes autochtones en se concentrant sur la spiritualité et la culture autochtones.
Aujourd'hui, je vous écris, fidèles du diocèse, pour vous inviter à soutenir ce fonds. Vos contributions nous aideront à atteindre notre engagement de 1,8 million de dollars et à soutenir des projets locaux déterminés en collaboration avec les Premières Nations et les Métis du diocèse ainsi qu'avec d'autres organisations et fournisseurs de services autochtones.
Le week-end du 23 et 24 septembre, le week-end précédant la Journée nationale pour la vérité et de la réconciliation qui aura lieu le samedi 30 septembre, chaque paroisse lancera une collecte spéciale pour le Fonds de Vérité et de Réconciliation. Nous sommes reconnaissants de votre soutien financier et nous vous demandons de prier pour que notre communauté catholique continue de prendre des mesures qui favorisent la guérison et la réconciliation.
