Catholics have a rich tradition of providing care for anyone in need. This tradition is rooted in the Gospel and in Jesus’ call to his disciples that they carry on his healing ministry to those who are sick and suffering.
As far back as the mid-1800s, innovative and determined women religious came to our diocese to establish hospitals, in Windsor, London, Chatham and Sarnia. Today, dedicated and very qualified lay people continue the works started by the sisters in health care facilities and hospices.
The week of October 6-12 has been designated the first ever National Catholic Health Care Week. I am very pleased to support this initiative. The week is a celebration of the values, roles, and impact of Catholic health care across Canada. With my blessing, a special section has been added to our diocesan website. I invite you to visit https://dol.ca/nchcw, to participate in this initiative and to learn more. There is a powerful video produced by the Catholic Health Alliance of Canada, "Proclaim and Awaken".
Catholic health care in Canada is a great blessing. We, Catholics, have a responsibility to support it and defend it. The week of October 6-12 is a special occasion for us to reflect on the importance of Catholic health care in our country. In this Year of Prayer, let us join together in prayer for all the sick, for their families and for the many caring people serving in our Catholic hospitals, hospices, and facilities that are at the forefront of providing patient-centered care. May the Lord strengthen them to be signs of his love and compassion in our world.
The Most Rev. Ronald P. Fabbro, CSB
