Recently, the Globe and Mail published an article about clergy sexual abuse called “The Walking Wounded.” It is a painful subject but one that must be acknowledged and understood, so that it never happens again. To that end, Fr. John Comiskey agreed to speak at length with the author last summer. That hour-long conversation was briefly summarized in the article.
The Diocese of London would like to offer further context. Our policy is to put the victim-survivors first, and this is why we cannot disclose information about their personal situation or the abusers who so grievously harmed them. The decision is theirs, and theirs alone, as to whether they wish to publicly speak about abuse, settlements, or any other private details. We are first and foremost accountable to the survivors, and we must respect both their privacy and their journey of healing.
Ultimately, we see our efforts to preserve a safe environment as fundamental to the Church’s mission and we will continue working hard to rebuild trust with those who have been let down. Anyone who is interested in learning more is invited to click here to
