Message from the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops (CCCB)

On behalf of the Catholic Bishops of Canada, I wish to extend to you our deepest condolences and assure you of our solidarity and support during this terrifying time. On the evening of 14 March, we learned about the horrendous shootings which took place at both Al Noor Mosque and Linwood Mosque, in Christchurch New Zealand, during Friday prayer, a time of worship and peace disrupted by violence and hate. We are horrified that the attack injured and killed so many people, and left behind a feeling of fear and uncertainty in your homes and places of worship. For Canadians, and especially Muslim Canadians, this act of horrific violence is a painful reminder to the shooting which took place 29 January 2017 at the Centre culturel islamique de Québec, in Canada.


Au nom des évêques catholiques du Canada, je vous exprime nos plus sincères condoléances et vous assure de notre solidarité et de notre soutien pendant ce temps d’effroi. C’est dans la soirée du 14 mars que nous avons appris l’horrible fusillade qui s’est déroulée à la Mosquée Al Noor et à la Mosquée Linwood, à Christchurch en Nouvelle-Zélande, pendant la prière du vendredi, un temps de paix et d’adoration perturbé par la violence et la haine. Nous sommes horrifiés que l’attentat ait blessé et causé la mort de tant de personnes, et qu’il ait laissé un sentiment de peur et d’incertitude dans vos foyers et lieux de culte. Pour les Canadiens et Canadiennes, et particulièrement les musulmanes et musulmans canadiens, cet acte de terrible violence est un triste rappel de la fusillade qui a eu lieu le 29 janvier 2017 au Centre culturel islamique de Québec, au Canada.
