Refugee Ministry receives $7,000 grant to help keep claimants safe during the COVID-19 pandemic.
For Immediate Release
London, Ontario – The Diocese of London’s Refugee Ministry Office has received a $7,000 grant from the Government of Canada’s COVID-19 Emergency Community Support Fund (ECSF) to help keep refugees stay safe during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The funds will help to implement two important initiatives:
The purchase of tablet computers for the Refugee Ministry Office. This will allow clients to participate in meetings and hearings virtually and to use the tablets to access documents and web-based resources safely. When visiting the office they will be used to conduct meetings with staff while maintaining physical distancing requirements.
The purchase of personal protective equipment (PPE). This includes items like disinfecting wipes, masks and hand sanitizer and other household cleaning products. Refugees are among the most vulnerable in our community and it is difficult for them to afford such essential items necessary to remain safe for themselves and those they may come in contact with.
There are many refugee families and in the Windsor/Essex area who receive assistance from the Refugee Ministry Office who will benefit from this funding. It is an important initiative that the Diocese is proud to be a part of.
Quotes “We are grateful for the support from the Emergency Community Support Fund. The funds are crucial to help refugee families stay safe while they navigate the settlement process. Refugees often lack the resources necessary to obtain enough PPE to stay safe. The technology will help us guide them through their application process and allow them to do so in a safe environment,” said Claire Roque, Ministry Specialist for Inland Protection of Refugees at the Diocese of London
"United Way/Centraide Windsor-Essex County is proud to enable this important investment to the Diocese of London Refugee Ministry Office so that they can continue their vital work of supporting refugees in Windsor-Essex to stay safe and connected during the coronavirus pandemic." – Lorraine Goddard, CEO, United Way/Centraide Windsor-Essex County
