It is with great joy that, along with the people of the Diocese of London, I offer sincere congratulations to Bishop-elect Alan Campeau on his appointment as Bishop of Thunder Bay.
The bishop-elect was born and raised in Belle River. After his graduation from St. Peter’s Seminary and his ordination in 1990, Father Campeau served in two parishes of the Diocese as associate pastor, St. Gregory’s in St. Clair Beach and then St. Pius X in London. In those years, Father Campeau heard of the need for priests in Thunder Bay. The invitation had been extended by Bishop John O’Mara and his successor, Bishop Fred Henry. After prayerful discernment, and with the permission of Bishop John Sherlock, Father Campeau accepted an appointment in the Diocese of Thunder Bay. That appointment was renewed by Bishop Fred Colli, the next bishop to lead the Diocese of Thunder Bay.
Father Campeau remained a priest of London, with the intention of returning home someday. His missionary spirit, however, tugged at his heart harder than his desire to return to London, as he saw the greater needs in Thunder Bay. The Holy Father has seen fit to name him Bishop of that same diocese, establishing his home where his heart has been all these years. I am confident this news will be received with great joy by the people of Thunder Bay. For us in London, while it represents the loss of a good priest, we can be proud of Bishop-elect Campeau’s missionary spirit and the selfless service he has shown in the priesthood.
Please join me in offering to Bishop-elect Campeau congratulations and the promise of our prayers as he takes on the responsibility of shepherding the people of the Diocese of Thunder Bay.
