It was announced today, 10 January, at noon Rome time, that Father Alan Campeau, a priest of the Diocese of London has been named Bishop of Thunder Bay, Ontario. He succeeds Bishop Fred Colli, whose resignation was accepted when he reached his 75th birthday in June 2024.
Bishop-elect Campeau was raised in Belle River; his family were members of Sts. Simon and Jude Parish there. He entered St. Peter’s Seminary and King’s College at UWO where he earned his BA in Philosophy and Sociology, followed by a Master of Divinity. He was ordained a priest of the Diocese of London by Bishop John Sherlock on 28 April 1990. After serving in St. Gregory the Great Parish (St. Clair Beach) and St. Pius X (London), he accepted an invitation to serve in the Diocese of Thunder Bay, whose Bishop Fred Henry was seeking help from other dioceses to manage parishes with a great shortage of priests. With the support of Bishop Sherlock, Father Campeau took up what was to be a short-term assignment in 1995. He served in many parishes and missions there, as well as having responsibility for the Eastern Deanery for a time and he was a member of the Council of Priests. He now becomes bishop of the diocese he has served for almost 30 years.
